I was a GS-3 Sales Store Checker for a year and now I recently got hired as a GS-5 Office Automation Assistant in the DoD.

The GS-5 job has no promotion potential.

Is it possible my agency would be willing to give multiple step increases every 52 weeks for good work/retention?
Or would I be forced to look for another GS-6 job in some other agency after 52 weeks?

I'd like to stick to federal most of my life, so I'm in search of a good career field.

In your opinion, is office automation / clerical stuff a dead end..?

Step increases are set in when they occur (step 2, 3 & 4 after 1 year, 5y, 6, & 7 after 2 years, 8,9 & 10 after 3 years). The other way to get a step increase is through a Quality Step Increase (QSI), which typically occur if you have a majorly outstanding appraisal (and are rare). So, to answer your question, while it is possible to get more than 1 step in a year, odds are extremely low.

As for your other question...positions with "Assistant" in the title tend to be low graded (and typically top out around GS9, though usually 7). Can be useful to get your foot in the door and some training to lead into a Specialist position. Specialist positions go all the way to GS15 (though once you get to 14 you are typically a manager, if only of a program and not a supervisor of people).

It all depends on what you want to do.
