I reached out to someone in HR asking about assistance or guidance for filling out the retirement application form, SF3107. I took a look at it and nearly fainted... it is hideous!

Their response? Well, just fill it out as best you can.

That sounds like a recipe for disaster... or is that how it is done?

It's why HR - at least that in my Agency - is not responsible for retirement forms. You need to be in touch with OPM Retirement Services which will direct you to your liaison. As an Army civilian, it was all directed thru Fort Riley, wherever you were based.

Does not look that hard, follow directions and go slow. you should have copies of everything. if not get a copy of your official personnel file, get all the information from it.

Yeah the "have copies of everything" part is a little worrying, especially after the ordeal I had with military buyback, which was a process of sending documents that DFAS had sent me over the years back to DFAS so they could send them back to me and then have the whole thing sent back to DFAS etc etc etc

Maybe in the future it will be a little bit more streamlined

Government to pilot online retirement application

I suspect the usual glitches in the first months... as well as some agencies hesitating to get on board... but supposedly this will help reduce processing times once they get rid of paper forms which much physically be moved from one agency to the next.

The ONLY thing I had any trouble with was some Workers Comp questions.

And in the end it was a big deal at all.

They asked for dates, shoot, I got hurt over three decades ago, from an injury which lasted a couple of days.

Who remembers stuff like that or keep records for over 30 years. I think it was like 34 years ago.

My agency (USPS) does a telephone process of helping you fill that your retirement paperwork and they told me what to write.

Does your agency help out like that?

Like I said, all they told me was to fill out the form as best I could. Guess I have at least a year to work on it :)

Thanks for the info

Seems to me like the same form used for years, pretty straight forth. Name, where you worked, if you have any military, surviver benifit, life insurance, routing number ( to get paid ) how much taxes you want taken out sign here!
Most of those sections and blocks don't apply to most. OPM already has all this info and is just looking for you to say you have something they don't! The only real issues is that you have the years and age to retire... OPM will allow you to retire if your not eligible for full retirement. EG: 10y plus MRA,20+60 make sure you ask if you have enought time! Many forget they took lwop for births or family issues that did not count for retiement.
You do get a phone call with OPM to go over line by line about 40 days out

Seems pretty straight forward to me.
