Department of Defense

The Department of Defense (DoD) is charged with coordinating and supervising all agencies and functions of the government relating directly to national security and the United States armed forces. The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and to protect the security of our country.

The Department of Defense is America's oldest and largest government agency -tracing its roots back to pre-Revolutionary times. Today, the Department is not only in charge of the military, but it also employs a civilian force of thousands. With over 1.4 million men and women on active duty, and 718,000 civilian personnel, DoD is the nation's largest employer. Another 1.1 million serve in the National Guard and Reserve forces. More than 2 million military retirees and their family members receive benefits.

Perhaps you are working for the DoD or interested in working for the DoD. Here is a forum to share your experience with the DoD.

I'm asking this as a hypothetical for me, but a reality for a coworker:

A coworker who was a WG-6 just took a GS-9 Overseas in Bahrain for 18months ( w/extendations up to 2years). He has return rights back to his old job. I've already done OCONUS but it was WG-6 to WG-7 then return rights backs to the same old job but with pay attention as WG-7 pay. Would then just send him back to WG-6 when it's his time is up? Or keep him as a GS and just give him a GS job back in the same base as before?

I'm also asking this for myself as I am trying to make the jump also to GS any way I can for over 2 years.

Return rights to the old position are just that...not a way to go from WG to GS and come back as GS using return rights. It can be used to go GS, then use that to apply to GS positions (perhaps even a promotion if you spend at least 52 weeks in the grade).

You should have voted Cthulu...the greatest of all Evils

"Positions" are rated not individuals. A position is a GS is a GS position. A position that is a WG position is a WG position. YOU are paid based on the "PAY SCALE" "of position" you are filling.
