Disability Retirement

The federal government allows employees who are unable to work to retire under a disability retirement. It is in the best interest of both employees and the federal government for employees to remain gainfully employed in their current grade or pay level, as long as they can provide useful and efficient service without endangering themselves, others or government property.
Disability retirement should be the very last option and should be used only when attempts have been made to preserve an individual's employment, and those attempts have failed.

Order our Disability Retirement guide to educate yourself on the rules and regulations concerning disability retirement for federal employees.

Update: Edited to include the exact wording on the letter seen in the portal: FYI:

I found out that I was approved through GRB (Government Retirement and Benefits). Has anyone else seen information that stated that they were approved before receiving an official letter from Boyers? I received an email stating go to the portal to see the response, and there is a letter to my retirement services section stating that I was approved. It also requested my last day of pay so that interim pay can be determined. I haven't found anything in this forum where this has happened to anyone else. I also included my timeline below.

A response for the following case has been prepared:
Case ID: 213846
Case Type: Pending/Closed Case Issues
You can view the response of this case by logging into the GRB Platform and clicking on the "Requests" icon in the dropdown Menu.

Update: The letter is from OPM address to our retirement service section (HR).Here is what the letter says:

United States office of Personnel Management

Department of VA, VHA RSSO
ATTN: HR Specialist

Suite 106

RE: my name
CSA#: XXXXXX
SSN: XXX-XX-XXXX

Dear Personnel Officer,

The individual shown above submitted an application for disability retirement that has been approved. Since it is possible that the individual may be without income, please provide OPM with the last day of pay to allow monthly interim annuity payments to begin within a short period of time.

To expedite processing of the annuity for this individual, please use the methods below to provide necessary information as soon as possible:

Phone:XXXXXXXXX
Fax: XXXXXXXXX
Email XXXXXXX

If the last day of the pay period will occur in the future, please mark the employees records so that once established, this information will be immediately sent to OPM. In addition, final retirement records should be submitted through the regular retirement processing channels of the agency. These final records are necessary before complete adjudication of annuity can take place.

Sincerly,

XXXXXXXXXXXX
Medical Specialist
Boyers Disability Section

Hi Sarge, I had never heard of the GRB before, I do see why. While it appears you have been approved, and rather quickly, I am puzzled about a letter TO OPM stating you were approved. Normally it's OPM doing the approving and mailing of any letter. Once approved, OPM will reach out to your agency and ask for your last date in service, and proof that you filed for SSDI. Your timeline is also not quite normal, and your agency doesn't do the requesting of interim pay, that can take weeks or longer? As long as the fine folks over at 888-767-6738 say you're approved! OPM should be your point of contact, they have no portal, usually don't respond to emails or accept voice mails anymore, & only answer the phones when they're there.

Congratulations!

GSBS. I found out that this is a new portal that VISN 6 (agency I fall under) is using to track retirement applications with OPM. I also edited my initial message to include the exact wording on the letter. It was actually a letter to my HR from OPM. Thanks for taking a look, then providing a response.

My agency was also started using a services portal for retirement process (different name from yours, but I assume they are similar, if not the same), which works collaboratively with OPM.
