What is the duty to warn management of impending planned FMLA (e.g., a non-emergent surgery)?

As a courtesy, I would let mine know as soon as I scheduled said surgery. A supervisor has plenty of deadlines, etc they need to meet, and their team is the one doing the work. If one is going to be out, being able to plan around that time away (ie have you sit with the coworkers who will be taking over for you while you are out to get them caught up and able to keep your projects moving) is valuable. They will find a way to do so even if they get little to no warning (emergencies do happen after all), but if they find out you knew and planned this event weeks or months out and didn't give them any heads up prior, you will have burned any trust they may have had with you. |

Would you want your supervisor to do the absolute minimum that they are contractually obligated to do, or would you prefer that they treat you with respect, courtesy, professionalism, and consideration? They and your team desereve the same.
