As a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and as one of the world's most efficient tax administrators, the IRS role is to help the large majority of compliant taxpayers with the tax law, while ensuring that the minority who are unwilling to comply pay their fair share. (Source: www.irs.gov)

I've only been with the service for 9 months. my mom just had an unscheduled major surgery. How can I get time off from work, other than using my sick and vacay time? Thank you in advance 😊

You don't want to place yourself in unpaid status. You could ask for Admin leave if available. Not wanting to use your "sick & vacay" with your 9 nine months of service is funny. You could apply for FMLA, might not have enough service to make that request? You can tell them you now have COVID, or you were exposed & must quarantine, not sure how that is treated these days? Ask your supervisor if you can take LWOP.
