Hi all, First off I want to thank everyone that posted advice on how I should prepare for my first Federal interview that occurred on July 9th. This interview was for a Administrative Suppot Assistant position (GS 5/6) with FEMA.

Just to give an update the interview went well. Everyone was so friendly and the interviewer and I talked for awhile. I really got good vibes from it. I do know several other people applied for the position but I don't know the exact number. What I do know is that five days later I got an e-mail from the interviewer verifying it was OK to do a reference check with my current employer. After I gave the OK for that my current employer as well as one of my references was called the next day (July 15).

Unfortunately all my current employer could say about me was that I was a current employee and refer them to HR. However I do believe that my first reference they called chatted with them for a bit. I do believe the person doing the reference calling was the same one I interviewed with.

It is now roughly three weeks since the interview. The only correspondence I have sent to the interviewer was a Thank You note that was sent out the same day as my interview and the e-mail saying it was OK to check my references that was sent out on the 14th. I did inquire during the interview as to how long it would be before they would reach a decision on the position and I was given the impression that it could be months.

Should I just sit tight until I hear from them or should I check up on it every now and then? This was my first Federal interview and I don't want to screw it up because I did not follow-up on the positions status. Also I have read on here that if they do reference checks that it is a very good sign they are very interested in you for the position. Is this true? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Send the person you interviewed with a polite email inquiring about your status. They typically respond, in my experience.

Thanks for the advice, when I inquired during the interview about the hiring timeline they said it could be several months before a decision is reached. I think sending a polite e-mail is a good idea but do you think I should wait a little while longer or do you think that three weeks has been enough time for me to start inquiring? I don't want to bug them but at the same time I want to show my interest for the position.

I got a reference check last week. I was told that it would be a few weeks before I received a further update.

An HR specialist is the only one who can call and offer the job.

Your HR specialist is most likely swamped with work and it's just not your turn yet.

I wouldn't take it as a bad sign that you haven't heard anything.
