In August I applied for a position at NIH, since I hadn't heard anything from them, I had given up on the position. However, today I recieved notification that my application was being referred to the selecting official. I am so excited but don't want to get my hopes up because I don't quite understand what happens next. Please help me out by answering a few questions.
1. What are the chances of me being interviewed? 2. Should I contact the hiring manager?
3. How long will it take to hear something back from them?
4. Will there be more than one interview?

All you can do is keep your fingers crossed that the hiring official calls you for an interview or selects you!

So it's possible to be hired without an interview? This position is quite interesting...it was posted in March of this year and then reposted in July. The deadline was extended from August 13 to August 20. What could cause some of these changes?

If you browse through the postings here you will find the answers you seek. Not trying to be unfriendly, just trying to help you help yourself.

Talking to my resident Human Resources specialist is that they will extend the deadline for a better pool of applicants or they are waiting for a certain person or a pre select (which is illegal ) but hard to prove in most cases. You can always file a protest but this is a very lengthy process and sometimes not worth the trouble.

It good that you made the cert and cross your fingers that they call you for an interview.

Thanks.I've found answers to all of the questions I posed but wanted to see if I could get a new, fresh perspective.I'm no stranger to researching discussion boards and the web for answers...just wanted a straightforward answer without having to sift through hundreds of posts with hundreds of different responses.
